A record $1.4 billion was generated in 2021 through online casino gambling and internet sports betting in the state of Michigan. These gross receipts were generated by the tribal casinos and the 3 Detroit commercial casinos. Internet casino online gambling brought in over $1 billion this year. In addition, gross sports betting winnings came in at over $292 million. The total gambling casino industry gains for the 2021 year was $3.7 billion.
Tax Payments Made to the State of Michigan
All of the Michigan casinos combined contributed $208.94 million in payments and taxes to the State of Michigan. Of this, over $201 million came from online gambling. In addition, $7.27 million was provided by internet sports betting activities.
MGM-Grand Detroit, MotorCity, and the Greektown Casino provided the City of Detroit with $59.35 million in municipal fees and taxes during 2021. Of this, over $55 million in tax dollars were generated from internet gaming. In addition, another $4.07 million was raised through online sports betting. Also, the tribal casinos contributed over $22 million in payments to the bodies governing the tribal communities.
December 2021 Casino Revenue Earnings
During December, over $156 million of gross receipts were brought in by the commercial and tribal casinos. These gross receipts were contributed by both the sports and casino gambling within the state. The adjusted gross receipts from all forms of gambling topped over $120 million during December.
Internet online gambling gross receipts for December came in at $121.76 million. This is a combined figure from both the commercial as well as the tribal casinos. This is a record and topped the previous record set in October of almost $110 million. On the sports betting sites, the operators raised $347.6 million in December.
December Taxes and Payments from Internet Online Gambling and Sports Betting
Over $23 million was raised in payments and taxes for the State in December. Broken down, internet online gambling raised $22.6 million in taxes for Michigan. In addition, over $738,000 was brought into the tax base from online sports betting.
The Detroit commercial casinos granted $6.26 million to the City of Detroit. The Tribal casinos paid $2.6 million to the bodies that govern the tribal lands in December.
